Most Australian backyards have one section that catches full sun from late morning onward. The table sits in it, the chairs get too hot to touch, and everyone drifts back inside with the air conditioning running. The furniture fades, the timber dries out, and an area you built for entertaining gets used for about two months of the year.
With a rectangle sail tensioned overhead, that space changes character. Four anchors hold a continuous span across the length of the table, and because the HDPE is breathable, hot air rises through the fabric instead of sitting under it. Be clear about what it is not: this fabric has no waterproof coating. Air and water both pass straight through, so it will not keep a table dry in the rain. It is sun shade, not a roof.
Nothing structural changes. You put four fixings in, pull one rectangle of fabric tight above the table, and the same paving that was unusable at midday becomes the spot where lunch happens.

A triangle is good at covering corners. A rectangle is good at covering area. If the thing you want shaded is longer than it is wide — a dining setting, an outdoor lounge, a stretch of pool coping — the rectangle puts fabric where people actually are instead of over empty paving.
Two fixing points at each end give you a flat, even sheet of shade, which is what a long table needs. It does mean finding four solid anchors rather than three.
Dining settings, day beds and pool edges are rectangular. Matching the sail to that shape wastes less fabric on ground nobody stands on.
The larger sizes cover a whole entertaining area under a single sail, so there is one tensioning job rather than several overlapping ones.
You can use one on its own or run several together at different heights to cover a larger or oddly shaped area.
This is a drill, a ladder and a second pair of hands. The fixings themselves are not in the pack — buy your ropes, turnbuckles and wall or post hardware at the same time as the sail, chosen for whatever you are anchoring into.
Measure post to post and wall to wall. Then subtract 30 to 40 cm at each corner for turnbuckles, shackles and rope. The sail you order should fit comfortably inside what is left.
Fix into wall studs, a solid pergola beam, brickwork or a properly concreted post. Fascia boards, gutter brackets and lattice will not hold a tensioned sail.
Mount two corners noticeably higher than the other two. A flat sail collects water and debris in the middle; a sloped one sheds both and looks better from the ground.
Work around the sail in turn rather than pulling one corner fully tight first. Keep going until the curved edges straighten out and there are no loose ripples left in the fabric.
Order by the distance between your anchors, not by the size of the area. Measure between the two points at each end, take 30 to 40 cm off each corner for hardware, and choose the largest sail that still fits inside that figure.

TipIf you are between two sizes, take the smaller one. A sail that cannot quite reach its anchors cannot be tensioned, and an untensioned sail flaps, sags and looks like a tarp.

Work from your anchor points, not the paving. If your fixings are about 4 m apart one way and 3 m the other, take 30 to 40 cm off each corner and you have roughly 3.2 to 3.4 m by 2.2 to 2.4 m of usable span — which is the 200 x 300 cm sail. The 300 x 400 cm would need anchors closer to 4.6 x 3.6 m apart. When in doubt, email us your two measurements.
Count your anchor points first. If you have four solid fixings around a long table or a deck, the rectangle gives you the most usable shade per sail. If you only have three, or the space is a corner between the house and two posts, the triangle version is the one that will fit.
No. The pack contains the sail only. Turnbuckles, shackles, rope, wall plates and posts are all bought separately, so you can match them to the surface you are anchoring into.
No, and we would rather say so before you buy. This fabric is breathable HDPE with no waterproof coating — air and water both pass through it. That is what stops heat building up underneath, but it also means rain comes through. If keeping a table dry is the goal, this is not the product.
Usually it just needs re-tensioning, which is normal maintenance on any tensioned sail. Take up the slack evenly at each corner with turnbuckles rather than pulling one side hard, and check that you have a genuine slope across the sail — a flat span will always look slack and will hold water and leaves in the middle.
We do not publish a wind rating for this sail, so we are not going to give you a number to rely on. Standard practice applies: take a sail down before forecast severe weather, and anchor into structure rather than trim so nothing is loaded beyond what it was built for.
