Plenty of Australian outdoor areas are perfectly good until the light goes. Then it is either eat inside, or drag out a lamp and run an extension lead across the deck for the third time this week. The table is right there, the weather is right, and the only thing missing is light — so the meal moves indoors by default and the outdoor setting sits in the dark.
With this overhead the corner runs on a single arrangement all day. Through the afternoon it is a 3 x 3 m triangle of coated fabric cutting the sun off the table. After dark the integrated LEDs take over, and the same spot becomes somewhere you would happily sit for two hours. Because the fabric is coated and waterproof, a shower does not end the evening either — the rain runs off the low corner instead of coming through.
Shade solves the afternoon. Lighting solves the evening. This sail does both from one set of three fixing points, which is the whole reason it exists.

Three points and a coated fabric are a different proposition to a four-corner mesh sail. The triangle is easier to place; the coating is what makes anchoring and slope non-negotiable.
A triangle fits between a house wall and two posts, or into a fence corner, where a rectangle would need a fourth anchor you do not have.
With three points it is simple to set one corner low, which is exactly what a waterproof sail needs so the water runs off rather than pooling in the centre.
Waterproof fabric does not breathe. Heat sits under it more than under an open weave, and wind pushes against it rather than through it — anchor into structure and take it down before storms.
Triangles combine. Two of these, offset and overlapping, cover more ground than one and give you a second set of lights across the area.
Get the fall right before you get the tension right. On a waterproof sail, a flat hang is what turns the first heavy shower into a sagging pocket of water.
You want roughly 3 x 3 m of sail, plus 30 to 40 cm at each corner for hardware — so anchor points around 3.6 to 3.8 m apart on each side.
House rafters, solid masonry, or posts set in concrete. A coated sail catches the wind rather than venting it, so gutters, fascia and fence palings are out of the question.
Set one corner at least 30 cm lower than the other two. That slope is what carries rain off the coated fabric instead of letting it collect in the middle.
Take up each corner a little at a time until the three edges pull straight. Check the lighting is working before you make the final adjustments and put the ladder away.
There is no dimension to choose here — every sail is a 3 x 3 m triangle. The decision is colour, and it changes how the sail reads both in daylight and once the lights are on.
