    The transformation

Shade that looks like it was planned

The usual fix is whatever was cheapest and blue, tied to a fence at one end. It works, in the sense that there is shade. It also becomes the first thing you see from inside, it flaps, and by the second summer nobody is pretending it is temporary any more.

    The result

A striped triangle does the same job and looks deliberate doing it. The stripe gives the fabric a direction and a scale, so the sail reads as part of the outdoor room rather than a patch over it — and the waterproof coating means it earns its keep in a shower, not just at midday.

    The difference

    See what shade can change.

Anything will block the sun. The question is what it does to the view from the kitchen window for the rest of the year — and a striped, coated triangle answers that differently to a plain one.

    Why this one

    Why the striped version

    • The stripe gives it scale

A large expanse of one flat colour looks like a surface. A striped one breaks up the span and reads more like an awning, which is why it works over decks and dining areas that are visible from inside the house.

    • Two colourways, chosen to be quiet

Grey and maple both sit back rather than competing with the house. There is no bright option here on purpose — this is the version you pick when the look is the point.

    • Three anchors, one slope

Three fixing points are quicker to find than four, and dropping the third corner turns the whole sail into a drainage plane. On a coated sail that pitch is not optional.

    • Coated means solid

It stops rain, which also means it stops air. Expect warm air to sit underneath on a still day, and expect it to take real wind load — anchor accordingly and drop it before a storm.

    Installation

Up in an afternoon, done properly

You receive the sail alone. Ropes, turnbuckles, eye bolts and any posts or masonry fixings are separate purchases — match them to what you are fixing into.

    1. Measure the span, then subtract

Measure between your three fixing points and allow around 30 to 40 cm at each corner for hardware. The sail is meant to sit inside the span with room to be pulled tight.

    2. Decide which way the stripe runs

Hold the sail up before you drill. The stripe direction changes how the space reads — usually you want it running along the length of a deck or across the line of sight from the house, not diagonally into a corner.

    3. Fix into structure and set the fall

Rafters, pergola frames, masonry with proper anchors or concreted posts. Set two corners high and the third clearly lower so water leaves at a point you have chosen rather than the lowest sag.

    4. Tension until the stripe is straight

Work around the corners in small increments. When the wrinkles disappear and the stripes run in clean lines, it is tight enough. If one stripe bows, that corner needs more.

    Choose your size

    Sizing it to the space

Each size is listed as its three edge lengths. Equal-sided triangles suit a central area you want covered evenly; the uneven options are the ones to reach for when the space is longer than it is wide, or the third anchor sits well off to one side.

    • 3 x 3 x 3 m

A courtyard, a balcony or a small four-seat setting where you mainly need the table out of the sun.

    • 4 x 4 x 4 m

A typical patio or deck with a six-seat table — even cover with room to push chairs back.

    • 3 x 4 x 5 m

An uneven span, where the three anchors are not symmetrical — along a wall, or into a corner of the garden.

    • 5 x 5 x 7 m

A long entertaining area or a wide deck, where one edge has to stretch further than the other two.

TipOrder to the distance between your anchors minus about 30 to 40 cm per corner. Sizing up to fill the gap exactly is the most common mistake — there is then nothing left to tension, and the sail sags.

    Questions about this sail

Answers drawn from this product's own specifications.

Same job, different finish. This one is a striped, two-tone sail in grey or maple, made from high-density coated fabric, and it is the version to choose when appearance matters as much as coverage. The plain Oxford triangle comes in nine solid colours and starts lower in price if you simply want the shade.

Grey sits well against rendered walls, charcoal roofing, aluminium and modern facades. Maple is the warmer of the two and works with brick, timber decking and planted gardens. Both are deliberately restrained, so neither will date as quickly as a bright colour.

The fabric is coated and sheds water, so light and moderate rain runs off rather than through. It is not a roof. It needs to be tensioned with a genuine slope so water leaves at the low corner, and heavy rain on a flat or slack sail will pool and eventually drip.

No. You receive the sail on its own. Ropes, turnbuckles and eye bolts are bought separately so you can match them to your anchor points and your sail size.

Structural points only: rafters, pergola posts, brickwork with masonry anchors, or posts set in concrete. A tensioned coated sail pulls constantly and pulls hardest in wind, so fence palings, lattice and guttering are not suitable.

Even tension. Tighten in small steps around the three corners rather than pulling one right up first, and re-tension after the first few weeks once everything has settled. If a stripe bows, the nearest corner is the one that needs taking up.
