Black Shade Sail – Breathable HDPE Outdoor Sun Protection

Create a cooler, more comfortable outdoor area with this black shade sail. Designed for Australian outdoor living, it provides practical shade while adding a clean, modern look to patios, gardens, balconies and poolside areas.

Made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE), the knitted breathable fabric helps reduce direct sun exposure while allowing air and water to pass through. This promotes natural airflow underneath the sail, helps limit heat build-up and reduces wind resistance.

    Why You'll Love It

    • UV Protection: Helps reduce direct exposure to the sun and creates a more comfortable shaded outdoor area.
    • Breathable HDPE Fabric: Knitted construction allows air to circulate naturally through the shade sail.
    • Reduced Heat Build-Up: Airflow through the fabric helps prevent excessive heat from becoming trapped underneath.
    • Reduced Wind Resistance: The breathable construction allows air to pass through instead of creating a completely solid barrier.
    • Modern Black Finish: A versatile contemporary look that complements a wide range of Australian outdoor spaces.
    • Reinforced Fixing Points: Designed for secure installation on suitable walls, posts or poles.
    • Versatile Outdoor Use: Ideal for patios, gardens, balconies, entertaining areas and poolside spaces.

    Made for Australian Outdoor Living

Whether you're creating shade over an outdoor seating area, balcony, garden or poolside space, this black HDPE shade sail provides an effective combination of sun protection, airflow and contemporary outdoor style.

    Breathable Outdoor Shade

The knitted HDPE construction allows air and water to pass through the fabric, helping maintain airflow underneath the sail while reducing heat build-up and wind resistance.

    The transformation

An exposed deck turned into a shaded one, without adding a roof

Balconies and open decks get the worst of it — no eaves, no trees, and often wind on top of the sun. A solid cover would need engineering and council thought. A cheap tarp becomes a sail in the true sense the first time a gust gets under it, and pulls on whatever you tied it to.

    The result

A knitted HDPE sail is the middle answer. It takes the direct sun off the space while letting air move through the fabric rather than catching it, and the fixing points are reinforced for anchoring to walls, posts or poles. Water goes through it as well as air, so it will not keep anything dry — this is shade and airflow, not weather protection.

    The difference

    See what shade can change.

Nothing is built and nothing is enclosed. One black sail tensioned above the space takes the direct sun off it, and the area you have been avoiding between eleven and four becomes somewhere to sit.

    Why this one

Why the black one rather than a coloured sail

Same breathable HDPE principle, a different set of trade-offs: one finish, a knitted construction, reinforced fixing points and a tighter range of square and rectangular sizes measured in metres.

    • A finish that disappears

Black reads as shade rather than as a coloured panel overhead. Against dark roofing, powder-coated steel or a modern render facade, it stops the sail from becoming the first thing you look at.

    • Built around airflow

The knitted construction is what lets air through, and the description is explicit about that reducing wind resistance compared with a completely solid barrier. On an open site that is the point of the product.

    • Squares and rectangles in metres

Nine sizes from 2x2 m to 5x5 m, plus longer runs like 4x6 m. Sizes here are listed in metres rather than centimetres, so read the selector carefully if you have been comparing with our coloured ranges.

    Installation

Anchor it properly, tension it properly

Fixings are not supplied. Buy rope, turnbuckles and shackles rated for the surface you are anchoring into — that decision matters more on an exposed site than anywhere else.

    1. Measure between anchors

Measure wall to wall or post to post, then subtract 30 to 40 cm at each corner for hardware. Order the sail that fits inside what is left, not the one that matches the area.

    2. Fix to walls, posts or poles

The reinforced fixing points are made for solid mounting surfaces. Anchor into brickwork, wall studs, a structural beam or a properly concreted post — never into fascia, gutter brackets or fence panels.

    3. Build in a real fall

Set two corners higher than the others so the sail slopes clearly. A flat sail holds water and leaves in the middle and looks slack from below no matter how hard you pull it.

    4. Tension evenly, then check it again

Work around the corners in turn until the fabric is taut with no ripples. Come back after the first week and take up any slack — that is normal on any tensioned sail.

    Choose your size

    Nine sizes, listed in metres

Measure the distance between the points you can actually fix to, take off 30 to 40 cm per corner for hardware, and pick the largest size that still fits. Squares suit open spaces where you are setting your own posts; the rectangles suit a run along a wall or a balcony.

    • 2 x 2 m

A balcony, a small courtyard or shade over a couple of chairs. The smallest and simplest to anchor.

    • 3 x 4 m

The usual choice over a dining setting or a small deck, with anchors around 3.6 x 4.6 m apart.

    • 4 x 6 m

The longest span in the range. For a run along a wall, a carport-width space or one side of a pool.

    • 5 x 5 m

The largest square. Covers a full entertaining area under a single sheet of fabric.

TipIf two sizes look close, order the smaller. A sail that does not reach its anchors cannot be tensioned, and slack fabric moves in the wind — which defeats the reason for choosing a breathable one.

    In the box

    In the pack

The sail only. No rope, turnbuckles, shackles or posts are supplied — the fixings you need depend on your mounting surface, so they are bought separately.

    Questions about this sail

Answers drawn from this product's own specifications.

This one is made in black only, which is the whole idea of it — a single contemporary finish that suits most Australian outdoor spaces without a decision to make. If you want beige, sand, grey, green, blue or red, our rectangle and triangle sails each come in nine colours.

We do not have measured temperature data for this fabric, so we are not going to quote you a figure. What we can tell you is how it is built: the knitted construction lets air and water pass through, so warm air rises away through the sail rather than being trapped under it.

Measure between your fixing points, subtract 30 to 40 cm at each corner for turnbuckles and rope, then take the largest size that fits inside that. Note that this product lists sizes in metres — 3x4 m here is the same span as 300 x 400 cm in our coloured ranges.

The construction is designed with that in mind: air passes through the knit instead of pressing against a solid sheet, and the fixing points are reinforced. But we publish no wind rating and will not imply one. Anchor into structure, keep the fabric properly tensioned, and take the sail down ahead of forecast severe weather.

No. You get the sail. Rope, turnbuckles, shackles and posts are sold separately, since the correct hardware depends on whether you are fixing to brick, timber, steel or a freestanding post.

No. This fabric lets water through as well as air — there is no waterproof coating. It is for sun and airflow. If you need rain cover, a breathable sail of any colour is the wrong product.
