Heavy Duty Shade Sail – Enhanced UV & Wind Protection

Create a more comfortable and protected outdoor space with this heavy duty shade sail. Designed for Australian outdoor living, its micro-ventilated HDPE fabric provides effective shade while allowing air to circulate through the material, helping reduce wind resistance.

Made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE), the fabric features UV treatment and a water-repellent finish for added protection against sun exposure and moderate moisture. Reinforced edges and stainless steel fixing points provide additional strength and stability when correctly installed.

    Why You'll Love It

    • Enhanced UV Protection: UV-treated fabric helps reduce direct exposure to the Australian sun.
    • Wind-Friendly Design: Micro-ventilated HDPE allows air to pass through, helping reduce wind resistance.
    • Heavy Duty Construction: Reinforced edges provide additional strength for outdoor installation.
    • Stainless Steel Fixings: Durable fixing points help provide a secure and properly tensioned installation.
    • Breathable HDPE Fabric: Promotes airflow and helps reduce heat build-up beneath the shade sail.
    • Water-Repellent Finish: Provides moderate protection against moisture while maintaining a breathable construction.
    • Versatile Outdoor Coverage: Ideal for patios, gardens, courtyards, entertaining areas and poolside spaces.

    Built for Australian Outdoor Spaces

Designed for areas exposed to sun and changing outdoor conditions, this HDPE shade sail combines breathable shade, reinforced construction and reduced wind resistance to create a practical outdoor protection solution.

    Installation Tip

Install the shade sail under appropriate tension and with a slight slope to encourage water runoff and help prevent water from accumulating on the fabric. Correct installation and suitable fixing points are essential for secure outdoor use.

    The transformation

From a slab you walk past to a room you sit in

Most Australian outdoor areas are not uncomfortable all day — they are uncomfortable for a few hours. The sun swings around, the pavers hold the heat, the tabletop gets too hot to lean on, and everyone drifts back inside through the sliding door. The furniture stays out there unused, slowly fading, and the best part of the house goes to waste for the exact hours you bought it for.

    The result

Under micro-ventilated HDPE the glare is cut and the air keeps moving. Heat coming off the paving passes up through the weave instead of gathering underneath, which is the difference between shade that feels stuffy and shade you can sit in at three in the afternoon. It will not keep you dry in a downpour — the fabric breathes, so water eventually finds its way through — but for the hours that actually push people indoors, it does the job.

    The difference

    See what shade can change.

Nothing structural changes. Four anchor points, a tensioned sail overhead, and the corner of the yard that nobody uses after midday becomes the corner everyone ends up in.

    Why this one

Why breathable HDPE, and where it earns its place

This is the open-weave option in the range. The fabric lets air through on purpose, and that single choice changes both how it feels underneath and how it behaves when the wind comes up.

    • AIR PASSES THROUGH

Heat that would sit trapped beneath a coated sail rises out through the weave. Under a mesh sail you get shade with airflow, not shade with a hot ceiling.

    • LESS LOAD ON ANCHORS

A sail that vents does not behave like a wall in a gust. Less force reaches the corners and the posts, which matters if your block is open to the wind.

    • SQUARES AND RECTANGLES

Four corners cover a table or a lounge setting edge to edge, with no wasted wedge of sun left over the way a triangle can leave one.

    • NOT A RAIN ROOF

The water-repellent finish sheds dew and light drizzle only. If you want a dry table in a shower, a coated waterproof sail is the right product, not this one.

    Installation

    Four steps, one afternoon

Two people make the tensioning far easier. Anchoring and tension are the two things that decide whether a sail lasts — take your time on those and the rest is straightforward.

    1. Measure the gap, not the sail

Measure between your fixing points, then allow 30 to 40 cm at every corner for shackles, turnbuckles and rope. Choose the sail size that leaves you that working gap.

    2. Anchor into structure

Rafters, solid masonry, or posts set in concrete. Never gutters, fascia boards, lattice or fence palings — none of them will hold a tensioned sail through a windy afternoon.

    3. Build in a fall

Set one or two corners clearly lower than the others. That slope keeps water and leaf litter moving off the fabric instead of collecting in the middle of it.

    4. Tension evenly

Work corner to corner, a little at a time, until the edges pull straight and the fabric stops shifting in the breeze. A slack sail flaps, and flapping is what wears a sail out.

    Choose your size

Sixteen sizes — how to land on yours

Sizes run from 200 x 200 cm up to 500 × 700 cm, square and rectangular. Choose by the area you want usable at the hottest hour of the day, not by the size of the whole yard.

    • 2 x 3 m

Balconies, a two-seat setting, or the doorway end of a narrow courtyard.

    • 3 x 4 m

The everyday patio size — covers a six-seat table with room to push the chairs back.

    • 4 x 5 m

A full lounge setting or a pool edge, shading the furniture and the space you walk around it.

    • 5 x 7 m

The largest span here — a long deck or an entertaining area that regularly holds a crowd.

TipIn Australia the sun sits to the north, so the shadow falls to the south of the sail. Hang it on the northern side of the table, and remember the 30 to 40 cm per corner for hardware when you compare a size against your span.

    What arrives in the box

The sail and its sewn-in corner fittings, and nothing else. Ropes, turnbuckles, shackles, wall hooks and posts are sold separately, so you can match the hardware to your own anchor points.

    Questions about this sail

Answers drawn from this product's own specifications.

No. The finish is water-repellent, which handles dew and light drizzle, but the fabric is breathable so steady rain passes through. If you want a dry space in a shower, choose a coated waterproof sail instead.

Measure the distance between the points you will actually fix to, then subtract 30 to 40 cm for each corner to leave room for hardware. Order the size that fits inside that measurement, not the one that matches it exactly.

No. You receive the sail with its stainless steel corner fittings. Ropes, shackles, turnbuckles, hooks and posts are bought separately so they can be sized to your anchor points.

Yes, into something structural — rafters or solid masonry. Do not fix to gutters, fascia boards, lattice or a paling fence. A tensioned sail pulls harder than people expect.

A properly tensioned sail with a fall built in sits still. Flapping almost always means it is too slack. No wind rating is published for this sail, so take it down before storms and severe weather.

Hose it down, and use mild soapy water with a soft brush for marks. Avoid harsh solvents and pressure washers, and let the fabric dry fully before folding it away for winter.
